Will We Have a Lunch Program?

24488832 - elementary pupils collecting healthy lunch in cafeteria

Good morning, Archway Lincoln families. I’m sure many of you are in the throes of uniform, shoe, and school supply shopping (and you’re eagerly awaiting drop-off on Thursday), but while we’re all looking forward to that first day of school, we need to look beyond it, as well.

The success of our lunch program — meaning whether we HAVE one or not — depends entirely on volunteers. Without you volunteering your time to serve lunches and snacks to our children, we can’t have a hot lunch program or snack bar.

This is a tragedy for two reasons:

  1. First, Dishes2U and the snack bar are PSO’s biggest source of income. We made over $7,000 in profit last year from our lunch program…money that was spent in part sending teachers to valuable Singapore Math training this summer, lavishing our teachers with much-deserved meals, treats, and massages during Teacher Appreciation Week, purchasing both a larger refrigerator for the teacher’s lounge as well as a cart to hold large rolls of paper, and money that was donated to our library, which will be used to make a cozy reading corner for teachers to use during group reading time.
  2. Second, our children LIKE having lunch options. Our biggest days are Pizza and Chik-fil-A. And don’t forget Treat Friday! Without a lunch program, each child must bring their own pack lunch. They can’t buy snacks. Plus, there won’t be the wonderful interaction that happens when you see the same bright, happy children each day you work in the lunchroom.

Right now, for the month of August, we are woefully understaffed for our lunchroom. There are many days where we have only one volunteer, and some days where we have none.

Working the lunchroom is quick and easy. It’s a two-hour commitment that requires minimal training, but has great rewards. Work one day a week or one day a month.

Please consider giving of your time to help this valuable program. We don’t want to discontinue it, but if we can’t find enough parents to help make it work, we may have no choice.

As a special incentive, any parents who commit to working at least one day a week this fall will have their registration fee with Dishes2U waived.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact Archway Lincoln PSO.

Thank you for giving of your time to this important program at our school.
